Communicating how to perform certain tasks effectively to learners is very important from both perspectives. Good, clear instructions reduce frustration on the learners side while reducing support time and costs on the admin side.
There are various different ways to communicate instructions to learners such as emails or labels added to the top of a course page but user tours go above and beyond.
Tours can be created for whatever page of your moodle site that you feel users will need help with. They can be created from scratch or templates can be downloaded from https://moodle.net/mod/data/view.php?id=17 .
How do they work? Basically, the first time a user enters the particular page they are presented with pop-up dialogue boxes that explain the main elements on the page that the user needs to use. These dialogue boxes only appear on the first visit unless the user resets the tour so they don’t interfere with future visits.
Here, we can see three user tours. We are going to take a look at the third one which is a tour of the ‘Moodle activities (standard)’ course.
So there you go with nice, clear and simple instructions that appear on the learner’s first visit.
